SCHOOL SAFETY BULLETIN
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As our nation enters this difficult time, please know your child’s safety is the number one priority of Leslie Public Schools. We have worked hard over the past two years to develop appropriate safety plans for our schools and will institute those plans as needed.
Many of you are aware that the Office of Homeland Security issues terrorist threat level warnings including a National Code Level Red. You may not be aware that Ingham County also may issue a Code Level Red. (Please note: An Ingham County Code Level Red means there is a severe risk of a terrorist attack in the area. A National Code Level Red may not signal a Code Level Red in Ingham County.)
If Ingham County emergency officials determine that there is a Code Level Red that impacts our schools, the following steps will be taken:
Should an announcement regarding an Ingham County Code Level Red comes before or after school hours:
- Leslie Public Schools will be CLOSED.
- All activities and events scheduled for any district facility will be cancelled until further notice.
- Normal school operations will remain closed until authorized by the Superintendent to re-open.
If the announcement regarding an Ingham County Code Level Red comes during school hours:
- School buildings will be secured in "lock down" condition and remain in session until regular dismissal.
- Normal transportation procedures will be implemented for students (i.e. regular bus routes, student drives him/herself or parent pickup), unless otherwise directed by local, county, or state emergency officials.
- All after-school activities and events will be cancelled.
If there is an announcement of a National Code Level Red:
- Our schools will remain in session in a "lock down" condition.
- Access to the interior of the buildings will be limited and identification will be required to pick up children. This identification must match your child’s emergency information before a child will be released.
- Permission to release over the phone will not and cannot be accepted.
How can you help?
- Immediately advise your child’s school if there are any recent changes to your child’s emergency contact information.
- Please do not call the schools. Two or three phone lines per school cannot handle the inquiries of hundreds of parents. You may become frustrated. Our phone lines must be open for emergency communication with local, county, or state emergency officials.
- Tune in to local radio or television stations, or check our web site at scnc.leslie.k12.mi.us. We will use both these means to update information as it becomes available.
We thank you for your cooperation as we take these important steps to ensure the safety of your children and our staff. Additional information will be sent home from building principals as it relates to each respective school.
