General Scholarship Application

 

DESCRIPTIONS OF AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS

 

  • LESLIE SCHOOL EMPLOYEES SCHOLARSHIPS (ranging from $250 - $2000)

This scholarship is made possible by contributions from the Leslie Public School’s administrators, teachers, and support staff.

Criteria: open to all graduating seniors with clearly set goals who plan on furthering their education through college, vocational training, or apprenticeship. 

Selection Process: All applications are screened by a committee of elementary, middle school, high school teachers and district support staff.  Up to 12 students are scheduled for an interview.  Recipients of the scholarships are selected by this committee.   Candidates for these scholarships must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • LESLIE FFA AGRICULTURE/SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP (1 or 2 scholarships – ranging from $400 - $800) Funding for this scholarship is a result of the purchase, development, and management of the Russell Miller Nature Center (Wild 100) by  Vocational Agriculture students, advisors, and FFA members started in the mid 1900’s.

Criteria: This scholarship is to be awarded to a student entering an agriculture-related profession.  First consideration will be given to an applicant with an agricultural background, then to a student entering a science-related profession with an emphasis on the natural resources/conservation-related profession.

Selection Process: Recipient is chosen from pool of applicants by the Faculty Council. 

 

 

  • LESLIE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (To be determined) This scholarship is made possible by contributions from the Leslie Educational Support Personnel Association to recognize seniors who are furthering their education at a vocational, technical, 2 year or 4 year college or university.

Criteria: Open to all graduating seniors (with a GPA of 2.5 or higher) who plan to further their education through college, vocational or technical school. 

Selection Process: Recipients will be chosen by a panel from the LESPA Union.

 

 

  • CARL SHEPHERD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (up to $1000) This scholarship is in memory of Carl Shepherd, a member of the Class of 1987, who died of leukemia during his senior year.

Criteria: Open to all graduating seniors who: have a 3.0 GPA or higher; are respected by students and teachers; assume responsibility; set an example of good citizenship for others; are involved in school activities (i.e. music, sports, government, honor society, or clubs); and are concerned with the welfare of his/her community by giving willingly of his/her time outside of school (i.e. church, scouts, FFA, 4-H).

Selection Process: Recipient is chosen from pool of applicants by the Faculty Council.

 

 

  • JACQUE LYNN ADAIR III MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (up to $250) In memory of Jacque Lynn Adair III, a member of the Class of 1999, who was killed in an automobile accident during his senior year.

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who have completed a program at the Wilson Talent Center and will continue training or preparing for employment in a related field.

Selection Process:  Recipient is chosen from pool of applicants by the Jacque Lynn Adair III

Scholarship Committee.   Candidates for this scholarship must pick up a one-page questionnaire.

  • JEAN EKINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (up to $1000) In memory of Jean Ekins, a Leslie High School teacher from 1975 until her death in July 1997.  Through all those years Jean gave herself unselfishly to the students.  She was to them a friend, a mentor, and a listening ear, someone who cared.

Criteria: Open to all graduating seniors who have managed to continue their education despite adversity; chosen to continue their education primarily because of the special encouragement of a teacher or other caring adult; demonstrated strength of character and determination; demonstrated a commitment to their education with a 2.0 GPA or higher; an acceptable attendance record; and completed the required application form.  An interview may be necessary to determine the recipient.

Selection Process: Recipient is chosen from pool of applicants by the Jean Ekins Memorial Scholarship Committee.   Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • ROLLY OLNEY SCHOLARSHIP (up to $500)    In memory of Rolly Olney, a Leslie High School graduate, public administration employee, and former coach. 

Criteria:  Open to all graduating student-athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who have earned a minimum of two varsity letters and who have an interest in pursuing a career in public administration, public works, or engineering.

Selection Process:  Recipient is chosen from pool of applicants by the Rolly Olney Scholarship Committee. Candidates for this scholarship must pick up two additional handouts.

  • THEATER ARTS SCHOLARSHIP (up to $500)  Designed to reward students for their

participation in the play productions.

Criteria: Must have participated in the play, either as cast or crew, for at least two years.

Selection Process: All applicants are scheduled for an interview.  Recipient is chosen by a three-person committee selected by the Director of the play.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • LORI FELL ALL AROUND SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP (500.00)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who plan to further their education through college.  The candidate must have a 3.0 GPA, was involved in an extra-curricular activity freshman through senior year, and have completed community service or volunteer work.

Selection Process: General application, student evaluation by a teacher and an essay of why they should earn the scholarship.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up one additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • CATHOLIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND ($1200) A scholarship sponsored by the Catholic Women’s Association and gifts by the Hazel Vaughn family. 

Criteria:  Open to all catholic students with a minimum 3.0 GPA, who are pursuing a degree in education. 

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the Catholic Women’s Association from a pool of applicants. One recipient between 3 school districts.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout.

  • LESLIE FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP ($250.00)

Criteria:  This scholarship is for those students who are going into the field of EMS/Firefighting, or healthcare services.  Preference will be given for EMS/firefighting. 

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the Leslie Fire Department from a pool of applicants.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • JAFTICA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP ($2,500.00 with a potential for renewal for 3 additional years)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who plan to attend a 2 year or 4 year institution. The candidate must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  MUST SUBMIT A CREATIVE PROJECT EXPLAINING PLANS FOR COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER.

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the JAFTICA board from a pool of applicants.

  • THE LEGEND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($250-$1000)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who are interested in obtaining a vocational training program certificate or trade apprenticeship.

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by The Legend Memorial scholarship committee.

Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout.

  • JENKS SCHOLARSHIP 2-($1000)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who plan to further their education through college.

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the Jenks scholarship committee.

Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • #73 BILL WELHUSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who played football and who plan to further their education by going to          college.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up one additional handout with the essay requirement.

 Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the Bill Welhusen scholarship committee.

  • MUSIC THEATER SCHOLARSHIP (up to $500)  Designed to reward students for their participation in the musical productions.

Criteria: Must have participated in the musical, either as cast or crew, for at least two years.

Selection Process: All applicants are scheduled for an interview.  Recipient is chosen by a three-person committee selected by the Director of the musical.  Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • ORTHOPEDIC REHAB SPECIALISTS SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Must have a GPA of at least         3.25.  Consideration will be given to extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership experiences.

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the ORS scholarship committee.

Candidates for this scholarship must pick up an additional handout with the essay requirement.

  • TRADES SCHOLARSHIP ($1000) with the potential of one additional year of $1000

Criteria:  Open to all graduating seniors who will be going into an apprenticeship/trades program and is from a low-income family. 

Selection Process:  Recipients are chosen by the Trades scholarship committee.
